The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has imposed severe sanctions on Katsina United FC following a violent incident during their Matchday 12 fixture against Barau FC.

The club was hit with a total fine of ₦9 million and ordered to play all subsequent home matches at a neutral venue in Jos, behind closed doors.

The penalty follows a league finding that Katsina United failed to maintain security and control over their supporters, which resulted in the brutal assault of Barau FC players and match officials.

Dawn Herald reported that the violence erupted shortly after Barau FC scored an equalizing goal in the 69th minute. Fans of the home side, Katsina United, reacted by throwing objects onto the pitch and physically attacking the visiting players and officials. Barau FC player Nana Abraham was reportedly among those injured in the assault, which forced the match to be abandoned.

The media officer of the club, Nasir Gide, had previously refuted reports of severe player injury, insisting that security maintained order and no fan invaded the pitch to stab anyone. However, the NPFL ruling confirms multiple rule breaches based on reports from match officials.

The sanctions are based on the failure of the club to adhere to the NPFL Framework and Rules, particularly regarding the provision of adequate security and the control of supporters, which are mandatory requirements for hosting league matches. Katsina United has been granted 48 hours to appeal the decision.

The ₦9 million fine includes specific amounts designated for security failure, fan misconduct, and compensation (₦4 million) for the medical treatment of injured Barau FC players, damages to the away team’s buses, and for detaining the visitors and match officials after the match.

The severity of the penalty is to serve as a major deterrent to other clubs and supporters, as the league seeks to clean up its image and protect the integrity of professional football in Nigeria.
