A Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) match between Katsina United and Barau FC in Katsina on Saturday was halted after violence erupted, leading to the assault of a Barau FC player.
The chaos began moments after Barau FC scored a late equalizer, making the score 1-1. Barau FC player Nana Abraham, who had already been substituted, was reportedly attacked while on the touchline among his non-playing teammates. The referee immediately stopped play, the match later resumed after calm was restored.
The NPFL has historically struggled to maintain crowd control, over violence often targeting opposing players, officials, and referees, especially after unfavorable home results.
The violence often results from a “win-at-all-cost” mentality and perceived poor officiating, which have repeatedly led to heavy sanctions, including points deductions and stadium bans on offending clubs, as seen recently with other teams in the league.
