Hoodlums on Wednesday attacked the motorcade of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, and his running mate, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

Both candidates escaped unhurt, though several vehicles in their convoy were damaged during the encounter.

The incident occurred at the popular Watt Market Roundabout as the convoy navigated to a hotel opposite the U.J. Esuene Stadium.

The NDC standard bearers were heading to a scheduled town hall meeting with party stakeholders and candidates, shortly after a courtesy visit to the Obong of Calabar.

Dawn Herald gathered that the attackers reportedly pelted the convoy with stones and other dangerous objects, which made some supporters to flee for safety.

Confirming the developments, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, stated that one suspect has been apprehended in connection with the attack on the NDC convoy.

ASP Akata assured the public that the command is on top of the situation, adding that its officers have increased surveillance across the city to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.

This attack came just hours after security agencies averted a potential clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the NDC within the metropolis.
