Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the incumbent Governor and candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has been declared the winner of the Anambra State governorship election, securing a second term in office.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Soludo polling 422,664 votes out of 584,054 total votes collated. His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), got a total of 99,445 votes. While the election was generally characterized by lack of violence, officials reported low voter turnout.
Governor Soludo, contested the off-cycle election as the incumbent, seeking to cement APGA’s long-standing control over the state.
The election was contested by sixteen candidates and was reportedly peaceful, as against previous elections marked by violence.
However, with the low turnout, where only 584,054 votes were collated from a registered voter population of over 2.8 million, has been a great concern, which election observers attributed to possible security fears and voter’s apathy. The exercise was previously marred by allegations of vote-buying, which INEC denied, but may have influenced the outcome.
