Six members of a family were found dead on Sunday, in their apartment at Ogale Eleme, Rivers State. Police discovered the bodies after receiving a call from a relative who reported that the family had not come out from their home since the previous night.
The deceased include Theophilus Obele (49), Eunice Obele (35), Saka Obele (18), Peace Obele (14), Nyimenka Obele (7), and Abel Nwaka (25).
Initial investigation conducted by the police revealed that carbon monoxide, was running in the family’s parlour while they slept. The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full autopsy and a thorough investigation to confirm the official cause of death and document photographic evidence.
Police emphasized that lack of ventilation was the primary factor in this tragedy. Commissioner Adepoju issued a public safety advisory, urging citizens to be vigilant and put on all safety precautions when igniting their generators;
When using generators, they should always be placed in well-ventilated outdoor areas, away from doors, windows, and vents, rather than in parlours, garages, or partially enclosed spaces – Commissioner Adepoju
The bodies have been deposited at the Last Home Mortuary in Ebubu Eleme for autopsy.
