The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into allegations of misconduct after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final matches. The probe focuses on incidents involving players, officials, and media during the fixtures between Nigeria and Algeria, as well as Cameroon and Morocco.

While Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 and Morocco beat Cameroon 2-0, both matches were overshadowed by aggressive protests against refereeing. In Marrakech, Algerian players surrounded Senegalese official Issa Sy, while in Rabat, the Cameroonian delegation expressed frustration over unawarded penalties.

‎CAF has already passed the match reports and video evidence to its Disciplinary Board to identify and penalize individuals involved in unacceptable behavior.

The investigation targets Algerian players who allegedly followed referees into the tunnel and media members who reportedly misbehaved in post-match areas. CAF condemned the events, stressing that match officials and organizers must be protected from intimidation.

CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers – CAF

‎Meanwhile, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has filed a complaint with both CAF and FIFA, over controversial refereeing and a denied handball penalty in favor of Nigeria.

‎The tournament proceeds with Nigeria scheduled to face Morocco in a semi-final clash.
