Chioma Ifemeludike, the African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate who lost the recent Anambra State election, has extended a personal invitation to her 292 voters for a celebratory lunch.
The actress, who gained a small fraction of the total vote against incumbent winner Charles Soludo (422,664 votes), chose to celebrate the voters who supported her anti-corruption campaign rather than focusing on the defeat.
During the election, Ifemeludike was an outspoken critic of vote-buying, alleging voters of selling their ballots for as little as ₦3,000 to ₦5,000, which she claimed undermined the integrity of the polls.
She specifically accused the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) of engaging in malpractice.
This very act is destroying our society, and it is totally unacceptable!… At this point, I don’t think it’s safe for anyone in opposition here. It’s highly dominated by transactional elements. This is wicked. This is unacceptable
Chioma Ifemeludike’s campaign gained massive attention as a female candidate leveraging her background as an actress and political science graduate to challenge the established political order.
Ifemeludike used her X (formerly Twitter) account to issue the invitation, tagging her small number of supporters as a dedicated group;
Dear 292 Solidarity voters, when can we have lunch, wine and hugs…? I can’t wait. Thank you. I love you
Ifemeludike’s gesture of appreciation has been celebrated by advocates of political reform as an unconventional but necessary step to promote conscientious voting.
