PDP faces North West divide over National Chairmanship

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing significant internal disagreement after the party’s Kebbi State chapter officially rejected the consensus nomination for the incoming National Chairman.

Speaking in Birnin Kebbi, State Publicity Secretary Sani Dododo articulated the discontent, stating the rejection was based on speculations that Turaki was handpicked for the position without consultation and any input from key stakeholders in the northwest region.

The state party leadership, argued that key stakeholders in the North West geo-political zone were not consulted, violating the party’s internal power-sharing principles.

The PDP is scheduled to hold its National Convention in November to elect a new National Chairman, a position currently micro-zoned to the North West region of the country following the broader party zoning formula.

Dawn Herald last week reported that the Former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, was endorsed as a consensus candidate by a caucus of Northern PDP leaders, including several governors, in Abuja earlier this week. However, the PDP’s political structure relies heavily on consensus and consultation among leaders from each of the six geo-political zones for allocating key national offices.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who announced the initial endorsement, clarified that the decision did not preclude other aspirants from contesting, suggesting the consensus was not binding on all party members.

‎The Kebbi PDP leadership has urged the NWC to actively permit North West elders to sit down, deliberate, and produce a candidate that will represent the zone. .
