PDP endorses Turaki as consensus National Chairman

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is pressing forward with preparations for its national convention, despite an ongoing court case challenging the legitimacy of the convention.

Leaders of the PDP from the north, including sitting state governors, unanimously endorsed former Minister of Special Duties Tanimu Turaki as their consensus candidate for the party’s National Chairman.

The endorsement of Turaki by the powerful northern bloc aims to consolidate support and project a unified front before the National Executive Committee (NEC) convention of the party, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, has been navigating internal divisions and legal challenges since its defeat in the last general election. A Federal High Court in Abuja, however, is scheduled to rule on October 31 regarding a suit that seeks to stop the convention from taking place.

Northern PDP leaders justify the action as a necessary step to ensure an unprecedentedly smooth and successful convention. ‎Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, stated that the endorsement aims to ensure cohesion, yet does not preclude other aspirants from contesting, noting that the party’s constitution guarantees every member the right to test their popularity at the convention.

The pending Federal High Court ruling represents the challenge to the party’s current process. If the court permits the convention to proceed, Turaki will likely emerge as the frontrunner, but if the convention is blocked, the party faces a protracted leadership crisis, forcing the NEC to revisit its timetable and internal legal structure. Any ruling against the convention proceeding could immediately halt all preparations and nullify the endorsements.
