Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports suggesting he accused President Muhammadu Buhari of links to Boko Haram. In a statement released on October 4, 2025, Jonathan said his statements were misinterpreted following his speech at the book launch of former Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor.
Jonathan’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, clarified that the former president never implied Buhari had any complicity with the terrorist group. He added that Jonathan referred to a documented period when Boko Haram used false representatives who named prominent Nigerians, including Buhari, as potential mediators without their knowledge, a deceptive tactic aimed at creating division and sowing confusion.
Jonathan emphasized that both Buhari and himself have been united against terrorism, sharing a common goal to restore peace and stability in Nigeria despite political differences. The statement questioned why Boko Haram failed to end their violent activities after Buhari assumed the presidency if he was truly their chosen negotiator.
The Office of the Former President called on media outlets and the public to disregard any misleading narratives about the issue and to provide genuine solutions to security challenges rather than engaging in divisive misinformation.
