The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Bola Tinubu’s October 1 Independence Day national broadcast as “uninspiring and disappointing”, criticizing the speech for ignoring Nigeria’s current insecurity and economic challenges.
Speaking at a press session in Abuja on October 2, PDP spokesman Ologunagba condemned the speech as disconnected from the harsh realities Nigerians face daily. He asserted that the address was filled with misleading claims and statistics that failed to capture insecurity, rising costs of living, and general fear experienced by citizens.
The PDP stressed violent incidents including recent attacks, which continue to paralyze farming, production, and daily life across parts of the country.
The party also pointed to escalating debt levels under the current administration, accusing it of borrowing without transparent development projects and fueling corruption. The party contrasted this with the previous PDP administration’s record of debt repayment and economic opportunities.
The party called for accountability and genuine leadership focused on tangible progress. Ologunagba suggested Nigerians deserve a government that provides both security and economic stability, restating to hold the government accountable and advocate for real change.
