A political advocacy group known as Bring Back Our Goodluck called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to re-enter the political arena and contest the 2027 presidential election during a recent event in Kano.
The group emphasized that Nigerians were deceived in 2015 when voting out his administration.
During a press briefing held at the Aminu Kano Centre for Democracy, Research and Training in Mambayya House, the movement’s National Coordinator, Dr. Grema Kyari, portrayed Jonathan as the most promising candidate to pull Nigeria out of its current socio-economic and security turmoil under the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Dr. Kyari reminded attendees of similar political returns seen globally, such as Donald Trump in the United States and John Mahama in Ghana, stressing that the former president’s comeback is not only welcome but essential. He expressed regret that Nigerians were misled five years ago by the APC leadership, promising change but instead delivering hunger, poverty, and widespread dissatisfaction.
The spokesperson recalled the era under Jonathan’s leadership as a period marked by relative economic calm, stating the administration’s efforts to maintain stable food prices, viable fuel costs, agricultural programs, and youth empowerment schemes like YouWin and SURE-P. The current skyrocketing cost of staple foods like rice, rising from about N7,800 under Jonathan to as high as N100,000 today, served as evidence of escalating hardship.
Kyari extolled Jonathan’s role as a unifier who appointed officials across ethnic and religious lines, making him uniquely suited to bridge Nigeria’s deepening divisions. Beyond urging Jonathan himself, the group appealed to other opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and others, to set aside their ambitions and support the former president’s candidacy as a collective front.
Kyari framed the 2027 elections not merely as a routine political exercise but as a crucial mission to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from further erosion under the current government. The campaign, initially launched in the North-East, is now gaining traction in the North-West, described as the commercial and political heartbeat of northern Nigeria.
In conclusion, Kyari addressed Jonathan directly:
In 2015, you chose peace over power. In 2027, Nigeria needs you to choose the people again. Let us drive away bad luck, poverty, and hunger. Together, let us bring back our Goodluck…we were misled in 2015 by the APC leaders who sold empty promises that led Nigeria into hardship and division. Jonathan’s governance was the last period of economic steadiness and hope for many
He further urged opposition figures to unite, stating that this move is not just another election year movement, it is a rescue campaign aimed at restoring the nation’s dignity and democratic values.
