Operatives from the Nasarawa State Police Command’s Doma Division have apprehended a notorious kidnap kingpin, Mohammed Bammi, also known as “Zomo,” hailing from Yelwa village.

The arrest was confirmed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, in a statement released on Sunday in Lafia, the state capital.

The individual is alleged to be the mastermind behind numerous kidnappings and armed robberies within the Doma Local Government Area and neighboring communities. According to the statement, the suspect had narrowly avoided capture during a previous police operation last month when some of his cohorts were detained.

During a clearance mission in Doka forest, vigilant officers spotted the fugitive. In an attempt to resist arrest, he brandished a knife towards the law enforcement officials but was quickly subdued and taken into custody. Following his interrogation, “Zomo” guided detectives to their base of operations in Alagye village, Doma, where the police seized several weapons and incriminating items. These included a pump-action rifle (Breech No. P331551), a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle with magazine, live ammunition, cartridges, a knife, a rope, mobile phones, and NSCDC uniforms.

In a related development, undercover agents from the Awe Area Command successfully rounded up five members of a suspected 10-person kidnapping gang during an operation at Gidan Taku village in Awe Local Government Area. The suspects, Michael Ato, Richard Ato, Alom Bernard, Hangior Ato, and Jacob Hunde, also called Okocha, were believed to have orchestrated the abduction of Blessing John of Gidan Makaranta village, Wuse. The police recovered two homemade AK-47 rifles and live ammunition from them.

Further investigations revealed that the same syndicate had earlier kidnapped Blessing John’s husband, John Ada Kuje, in April 2024, releasing him only after a ransom was paid.

The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State praised the dedicated officers for their bravery and professionalism. He urged them to maintain relentless pressure on criminals until the state is entirely free of kidnappers and armed bandits. All detained suspects have been handed over to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for further examination and legal proceedings.
