Former President of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan has pledged to take an active role in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
This decision was made after a meeting in Abuja between the former president and the newly elected chairman of the party.
Goodluck Jonathan officially pledged to be more involved in the affairs of the party, recounting his status as a card-carrying member despite years of maintaining a low political profile.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria for 16 years until 2015, has faced persistent internal instability since losing power. The current crisis escalated after a National Convention in Ibadan in November 2025, where Tanimu Turaki was elected National Chairman.
While the majority of PDP governors and party elders support Turaki, a rival faction aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, rejects the outcome of the convention.
This group contends that the Turaki leadership is illegitimate due to unresolved court orders. Represented by figures such as Samuel Anyanwu, they argue that a caretaker committee is the only legal body currently authorized to run the party until a credible, all-inclusive convention is held. The internal rift has paralyzed the administration of the party and complicates its plans to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Due to ongoing leadership litigation, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has currently declined to recognize official PDP candidates for upcoming off-season elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
The PDP leadership plans to continue consultations with other elder statesmen, including former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, to mediate the crisis.
