The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a National Day of Action set for January 14, 2026, to protest the implementation of the new Tax Reform Law.
The decision comes as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially launched the reforms today, January 1, despite opposition from legal experts, labor unions, and opposition parties who claim the enacted laws differ from those approved by the legislature.
While the government claims the reforms simplify compliance and exempt low-income earners making lesser than ₦800,000 annually, opponents held firm on the legislative forgery allegation. They argue that the final gazetted copies contain unauthorized provisions that benefit wealthy corporations while placing burden on the middle class.
NANS has ordered a mass march on the Presidential Villa in Abuja, demanding an immediate suspension of the law.
A Federal High Court in Abuja declined an eleventh-hour request to halt the January 1 start date, ruling that it lacks the power to stop a signed law without concrete evidence of wrongdoing at this stage.
A civil society group, ‘House to the Rescue’, has offered a ₦3 million reward to any lawmaker who can produce an authentic copy of the bill that matches the gazetted version.
