Two separate road accidents claimed 22 lives on Tuesday, December 30,  just five days after a Christmas Day crash in the state that killed 11 people, bringing the festive season’s death toll on Jigawa roads to 33.

‎The most devastating crash occurred around 12:15 PM in Danmasara town, Dutse Local Government Area, along the busy Dutse-Kwanar Huguma road, where the tyre of a white Volkswagen Golf with the number “XA500KYW” suddenly burst, while speeding, causing the driver to lose control and collide head-on with a red Golf car. Moments later, a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck with the number “BUU289XA”, crushed both smaller vehicles.

‎17 people died, including several children. Dawn Herald gathered that one of the Golf cars was carrying 14 members of the same family traveling to a wedding; there were no survivors from that vehicle.

‎Less than an hour later, at approximately 1:00 PM, another fatal accident was reported at Bandawa village in Ringim Local Government Area, when a goat suddenly crossed the road, as a family of six was traveling from Kano to Babura in an ash-colored Honda Accord with the number,”ABJ 730 AX”.

‎In an attempt to avoid the animal, the 27-year-old driver, Yunusa Hassan, lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and slammed into a tree.
‎As at the time this report was published, five (5) people lost their lives instantly. Two survivors sustained severe fractures and are currently fighting for their lives at the hospital.

‎The Jigawa Sector Commander, Umar Matazu, expressed regret over recurring accidents in the state. He stated that commercial drivers frequently transform 5-seater Volkswagen Golfs into “moving coffins” by loading them with up to 20 passengers, putting pressure on the tyres. He advised passengers to reject boarding overloaded vehicles.
