The Federal Government has officially ordered the reopening of all 47 Federal Unity Colleges that were initially closed in late November due to the wave of student abductions.
The announcement, made on Thursday, by the Federal Ministry of Education, confirms that academic activities have fully resumed after strengthening security architecture around schools.
Dawn Herald reported weeks ago, that schools were closed as a precautionary measure following the abduction of over 300 pupils from St. Mary Catholic School, in Niger State and a separate attack in Kebbi State.
Unity Schools, established to foster national integration, have recently become prime targets for bandits and kidnappers due to their large student populations and often remote boarding facilities. In response to November 21, closure directive, the government launched the Safe Schools Initiative, a multi-agency project involving the Police, NSCDC, and DSS, to protect school from the activities of non-states actors
Lawmakers are currently investigating why abductions persisted despite the ₦15 billion investment in school safety including the procurement of surveillance drones, command centers, and rapid-response teams.
The Federal Government restates its commitment to maintain the 2025/2026 academic calendar, stating that no child should be denied access to education due to security concerns.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education stated that academic activities are now in full swing, stressing that some students have already successfully completed their first-term examinations.
