The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday night.

The announcement was made by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, during the 14th National Caucus meeting of the party at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

Mutfwang’s departure leaves the PDP with just four governors nationwide which includes Oyo, Bauchi, Zamfara, and Adamawa.

Governor Mutfwang, who won his seat under the PDP in 2023, had been facing internal pressure and a deepening crisis within the leadership of his former party.

The defections, marks the first time since the Fourth Republic began in 1999 that all six states in the North-Central zone are governed by a single party.

President Tinubu reportedly played a role in the defection by personally inviting Mutfwang to join the ruling party during several private consultations throughout the year.

‎The APC now controls 28 out of 36 states in Nigeria. This consolidation is a record high for the ruling party since its formation in 2013.

‎Prof. Yilwatda declared that the North-Central geopolitical zone, which includes Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue, is now a fully APC-governed territory.

‎Mutfwang revealed he made the decision to protect the mandate given to him by the people of Plateau. He argued that the national-level crisis in the PDP made the party an unrealistic podium for the electoral success and development of the future.

‎The APC National Chairman has directed all new and old members to complete their electronic membership registration by January 30, 2026.
