The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced it will recommence the enforcement of the tinted glass permit regulation nationwide, effective January 2, 2026.
The police had voluntarily suspended enforcement of this regulation in October 2025 following a court order that temporarily challenged the exercise, providing motorists time to regularize their permits.
The decision to resume enforcement was based on a reassessment of prevailing security challenges and a direct link identified between unauthorized tinted vehicle windows and rising criminal activities.
The Force Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the resumption, stating that the police are currently not under any court order preventing enforcement.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the enforcement exercise would be carried out professionally, with due regard for citizens’ rights, and in strict compliance with the law.
The Nigeria Police Force stressed that this resumption is a necessary security measure aimed at protecting lives and property by removing a tool used by criminals to facilitate crimes. The police also stated that the move will help law enforcement effectively identify and apprehend suspects.
Many motorists have raised concerns that the enforcement of tinted glass regulations can be used as a pretext for extortion or arbitrary stops by some officers. The IGP pledged to ensure full compliance by deploying heavy security presence nationwide, without violating citizens right.
Motorists with tinted glass permits have been advised to apply through the appropriate official channels before the January 2, 2026, deadline to avoid sanctions.
