Former First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, made a revelation regarding the health crisis that afflicted her husband, the late President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2017, and the climate of intrigue that permeated Aso Rock.
Her account, published in the new 600-page biography, ‘From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari’, debunks conspiracy theories, attributing his illness to a breakdown in his nutritional routine.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in July 2025, spent a total of 154 days on extended medical leave in the United Kingdom in 2017 for an undisclosed illness.
According to the book, the former First Lady had long managed her husband’s specific regimen of meals and supplements, important for an elderly man with a history of malnutrition symptoms.
She claimed the crisis began when gossip and fear convinced the President that she was planning to kill him, leading him to disregard his supervised nutritional routine and begin locking his room. She stated that the health crisis the former president faced was not mysterious or due to poisoning, but originated from the loss of a routine and mismanaged meals and supplements by staff.
Aisha Buhari in the biography, refuted the rumor that President Buhari was replaced by Jibril of Sudan, describing the entire notion as absurd.
