Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, announced on Sunday that filling stations purchasing refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS),  (petrol), from his facility will begin reselling the product at a maximum price of N739 per liter starting this Tuesday in Lagos.

‎Stations buying from the refinery, beginning with MRS in Lagos on Tuesday, will start selling petrol at a pump price of N739 per liter (N740 nationwide maximum), following the ex-depot price cut to N699/liter.

‎The Dangote Refinery, the world’s largest single-train refinery, commenced operations in 2024, marking the transition of Nigeria towards self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products after the removal of fuel subsidies. The initial market price of petrol had surged considerably after deregulation.

‎Speaking at a press briefing, Dangote expressed determination to curb what he called the sabotage of his price reduction by market intermediaries.

‎Dangote criticized the NMDPRA for the reckless issuance of licenses, alleging the agency is planning to issue licenses for the importation of 7.5 billion liters of petrol in Q1 2026, which he claimed undermines domestic investment.

‎The Chairman disclosed plans to list the refinery on the stock exchange, stating that the objective is to allow every living Nigerian to own part of the business, without a share ownership cap.

‎However, some Nigerians including Professor Wunmi Iledare, warned regulators to be vigilant. While welcoming the reduction, they caution that Dangote’s increasing market dominance requires strong oversight to prevent discriminatory practices, ensure the full benefit reaches consumers, and protect smaller, independent marketers from being strangulated.
