Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has dismissed allegations linking him to terrorism financing as baseless and politically motivated, after a publication that suggested he had ties to suspected financiers.

In a statement released on Friday, Malami described the claims as unfounded and contrary to his record in public office. He emphasized that during his tenure, he was instrumental in strengthening the anti-money laundering frameworks, which eventually led to the removal of NIgeria from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.

Malami stated that he has never at any time been accused, invited, interrogated, investigated or charged by any security or intelligence agency, either within Nigeria or internationally, regarding terrorism financing.

He argued that the publication in question manipulated the account of a retired military officer. According to Malami, the officer did not accuse him of financing terrorism but made vague assertions about institutional relationships, which were then sensationalized by political opponents to imply guilt.

He condemned the attempt to criminalize lawful professional engagements, stating that associating an individual with such grave crimes must be based on verifiable facts rather than conjecture or guilt by association.
