Goodluck Jonathan evacuated as Nigeria strongly condemns Guinea-Bissau coup

Nigeria has condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, where former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was leading an election observation mission. The Federal Government of Nigeria confirmed on Thursday that Jonathan and his delegation were safely evacuated from the West African nation via a special flight.

The coup, which took place on Wednesday, where the military seized total control, arresting incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, suspending the ongoing electoral process, and shutting borders. Jonathan who was trapped, had been in the country as head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission for the just concluded November 23 presidential and legislative elections.

‎The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, assured the public that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau and that he left with a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas.

‎The Federal Government called the coup a serious threat to democracy and a blatant violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, urging the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.

‎ECOWAS and the African Union condemned the unconstitutional change of government. Jonathan and other observers also issued a statement describing the coup as an attempt to disrupt Guinea-Bissau’s democratic process.

‎The coup leaders, who appointed General Horta N’Tam to lead the country for one year, said that it was due to national instability and electoral irregularities that led them to overthrow the government.
