President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, authorizing the immediate recruitment of 50,000 police officers and additional army personnel to tackle the escalating crisis of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the country.
The directive, issued in a public statement on November 26, 2025, authorizes the use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary police training depots and orders the deployment of already-trained forest guards by the Department of State Services (DSS) to flush out criminals.
The President authorized the recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers, bringing the total new intake to 50,000, and sanctioned more recruitment into the Armed Forces.
The President directed that police officers withdrawn from VIP guard duties undergo crash training before being redeployed to hotspot areas, in order to deliver efficient services.
President Tinubu called on the National Assembly to begin reviewing laws to enable states that require State Police to establish them. He also urged herder associations to end open grazing and embrace ranching through the new Livestock Ministry to resolve the persistent farmer-herder clashes.
This is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas. There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence. The President commended security agencies for securing the release of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 worshippers in Kwara but charged them their operations of rescuing the remaining students of the Catholic School in Niger State and other hostages.
