Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku announced the move via his official X handle on Monday, posting a photograph of himself holding his ADC membership card with the caption, “It’s official”. This action comes four months after his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirming the ADC as the chosen vehicle for key opposition heavyweights to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADC was adopted in July 2025 as the unified platform for the coalition of opposition leaders, including Abubakar, Peter Obi (Labour Party’s 2023 candidate), former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others.

‎Atiku’s move follows his July resignation from the PDP, a party he co-founded, due to the then existing “irreconcilable differences”, which made his lost faith in its direction. This marks Atiku’s third exit from the Peoples Democratic Party since 1999.

While Abubakar, a three-time presidential candidate, has not officially declared his ambition for 2027, he is being regarded as the most likely figure to emerge as the coalition’s flagbearer, to contest against the ruling APC.
