President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a second five-year term.
The reappointment, announced on Friday, November 14, means that the former military officer will remain at the helm of the anti-narcotics agency until 2031.
President Tinubu released a strong statement urging the NDLEA to continue its aggressive campaign against narcotics:
Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse. I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones
General Marwa’s tenure renewal is seen as an endorsement due to the performance of the agency since his initial appointment in 2021. Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has achieved what many observers, including the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), describe as a transformative and results-driven era.
He led the arrest of over 73,000 drug mules and barons, the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of various illicit substances, securing over 12,000 convictions, intensifying the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign through nationwide sensitization and rehabilitation programs.
Marwa, a former Military Governor of Lagos and Borno States, was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021. His reappointment by a new administration is an indication of confidence in his record, transcending political transitions.
Marwa is highly educated, holding a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
