PDP vows to proceed with convention despite court order

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced it will proceed with its scheduled elective national convention on November 15 and 16, despite a fresh Federal High Court order restraining it from doing so.

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ibrahim Abdullahi, dismissed the ruling as “a waste of time”, giving reference to a Supreme Court precedent that grants political parties autonomy over their internal processes.

‎There’s no way they will stop us. We have a subsisting Supreme Court judgment that says the internal affairs of parties are within their exclusive rights, and we’re adhering to that

The court order, issued by Justice Peter Lifu in Abuja, bars the PDP from holding the convention and restrains the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing its outcome.

The Abuja Federal High Court order was secured by a national chairmanship aspirant, Sule Lamido, who alleged he was denied the opportunity to purchase a nomination form and that the party failed to comply with the mandatory 21-day notice for the convention. This ruling directly contradicts an earlier order from the Oyo State High Court, which had approved the convention to proceed.
