A high-ranking official from Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has publicly demanded the immediate dismissal of an armed soldier who confronted and blocked FCT Minister Nyesom Wike during a land dispute inspection.
Joe Igbokwe, an APC chieftain, criticized the soldier’s defiance of a sitting federal minister performing his duties, claiming to be acting on the orders from above;
Who is this man in uniform? Of what meat is he fed? Who is beating the drum for him? This is unacceptable? His uniform has to be removed
Minister Wike, upon assuming his role, vowed to restore the city’s master plan by addressing illegal land appropriation, which has countlessly put him in direct conflict with entrenched interests.
The demand for the dismissal of the soldier by a ruling party chieftain, despite Wike belonging to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), shows the sensitivities surrounding the role of military in civil governance.
