Sixteen military officers, including a brigadier general and several lieutenant colonels, have been detained amid investigations into a foiled coup plot targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
According to reports from Premium Times, the detained officers come from various branches of the Nigerian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The group comprises one brigadier general, one colonel, four lieutenant colonels, five majors, two captains, one lieutenant, one naval lieutenant commander, and one Air Force squadron leader.
Most of the Army officers are from the Infantry Corps, Nigeria’s frontline combat unit, with others from the Signals and Ordnance Corps. Among those detained is Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, suspected to be the plot leader.
Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, service number N/10321, was born on January 3, 1974. He underwent training as an NDA cadet from August 14, 1992, to September 20, 1997, and is believed to be the suspected leader of the alleged coup.
A member of Regular Course 44 and a native of Nasarawa State, Sadiq advanced through the military ranks, achieving the rank of colonel in 2015 and brigadier in 2019. He serves in the infantry corps.
Sadiq has previously faced scrutiny over allegations involving the misappropriation of military equipment.
Other key figures in the alleged plot include Colonel M.A. Ma’aji, a former commanding officer in Ondo State, and several lieutenant colonels and majors who have served in various operational and security roles.
The Defence Headquarters and the Presidency have dismissed the coup allegations publicly, despite reports linking the failed plot to the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade.
