The Federal Government of Nigeria has released N2.3 billion to federal universities to clear outstanding salary and promotion arrears.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, disclosed the disbursement on Wednesday as part of the government’s engagement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The relationship between the Federal Government and ASUU has historically been strained, frequently leading to prolonged strikes that disrupt the academic calendar. A central and perennial issue in these disputes is the non-payment of earned allowances and other welfare benefits, coupled with underfunding of the university system.

This N2.3 billion release, processed by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, addresses the Batch 8 salary and promotion arrears, a commitment from the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve these lingering issues and foster a stable academic environment. The continued dialogue is being facilitated by the Yayale Ahmed Negotiating Committee.

However, the government has drawn a clear line on fiscal responsibility, stating that ASUU may not secure every demand, particularly those requiring massive, long-term budgetary increases.

‎University administrations are expected to begin receiving payment alerts shortly for the released arrears. The Yayale Ahmed Negotiating Committee promised to continue its work to secure a final, agreement that addresses the remaining points of contention with ASUU and other unions.
