The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has dismissed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s claim that political actors are pressuring him to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Over the weekend, Governor Mutfwang addressed the audience at the Government House banquet hall in Jos, revealing that several members of the APC have urged him to join their ranks. Despite the pressure, he emphasized that only divine guidance and the will of his constituents could make him consider switching parties.
It is not a lie that they are putting pressure on me. But I told them that only two people would authorise me to change my party. One is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people…60 to 70 per cent of APC members in the state would be glad to have us in their party, but I won’t join them – Mutfwang
Mutfwang’s statement responded to several calls from various APC groups, including the North Central APC Forum led by Saleh Zazzaga, urging him to defect since last year.
However, APC’s stakeholders recently voted against his entry, declaring that the governor was “not needed” in the party.
Responding to the governor’s claims, APC acting publicity secretary Shittu Bamaiyi challenged Mutfwang’s claims, calling them “self-denial.”
If he truly meant well for his supporters and the state, he should have courageously named those pressuring him and explained why – Bamaiyi
He argued that if the governor’s performance had satisfied Plateau residents, talk of defection would not be necessary.
