Zakari Abdulkadir Yelwa, the principal of a junior secondary school in Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and his daughter, Hafsat Dauda, were abducted from their residence on Wednesday night. The principal’s wife, Rakiya Zakari Yelwa, was initially taken but later released by the kidnappers.
The incident occurred in the nation’s capital, which has recently experienced a rise in kidnapping-for-ransom, in its suburban and outlying areas.
In relation to this troubling trend, recall Dawn Herald last week wrote a report about a primary school teacher, Ishaya Ismaila, who was abducted by kidnappers from his farm on Thursday evening at Tungan Maje while harvesting maize, demanding a ransom of N1 million, which has been difficult for his family and colleagues to raise.
This incident also comes barely one week after a teacher from a primary school in the nearby Bwari Area Council was kidnapped and subsequently released after a ransom was paid.
The kidnappers in the latest incident in Abaji Area Council, reportedly gained entry by scaling an uncompleted security fence during a heavy rainstorm.
The principal’s son, Mohammed Zakari Yelwa, who escaped the attack recounted the incident, saying that;
The kidnappers went to one of the windows, forcefully pulled down the burglary proof, and entered – Mohammed
The family is now awaiting contact from the abductors, having no immediate information on ransom demands
While local police confirmed the report, attempts to obtain an official statement from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) were unsuccessful.
A police source at the Abaji Area Command confirmed the abduction but referred reporters to the headquarters for detailed commentary.
This event calls for enhanced security measures in outlying districts in the FCT to protect workers and residents from criminal elements.
