A probe into an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government has placed a former state governor under scrutiny. Sources reveal that authorities suspect the former governor, who hails from a southern state, may have provided financial backing for the alleged plot, which was planned for October 25.
This led to the detention of 16 military officers by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) for “unprofessional conduct.”
This group include a Brigadier-General and a Colonel, some of whom were reportedly attached to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). While two prominent Nigerian news outlets reported the detentions were linked to an alleged coup plot, the military has strongly disputed that claim.
The civilian under investigation is identified as a former governor with past ties to the oil and gas sector. Investigators are focusing on his recent contact with the detained officers, and he could be summoned for questioning if a credible link is established.
More officers are being questioned, and other influential politicians from both the north and south of the country are reportedly being watched.
