Security forces in Abuja, have deployed new roadblocks at all major entry points, creating traffic gridlock and trapping commuters.
The roadblocks executed by the Guards Brigade and Federal Capital Territory Police, targets the ongoing demonstration led by activist Omoyele Sowore’s #RevolutionNow movement for the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu.
The roadblocks were concentrated near major governmental structures, including the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly. However, the security perimeter now extends to Bwari and Nyanya entry points, sealing off access to the City Centre.
A security official speaking anonymously stated that the stringent checks became necessary to prevent external aggressors from infiltrating the nation’s capital. He added that every motorist entering the FCT is being screened in order to separate infiltrators from genuine and law-abiding Nigerians.
The aggressive security response successfully enforces stability in the short term but at the cost of crippling daily commerce and transportation within the Federal Capital Territory, leaving many Nigerians in question, particularly those trying to meet ends means.
