Security forces in Abuja, violently broke up a demonstration today, October 20, 2025, deploying tear gas and firing what protesters claim were live rounds. The protest, led by U.S.-based Nigerian human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, demanded the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

‎The protest focused on the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing charges including terrorism and treasonable felony. Kanu is a figurehead for the separatist movement in Southeastern Nigeria, a region with historical ties to the 1960s Biafran War, and his arrest and detention have consistently raised concerns among diaspora communities and international human rights advocates.

‎The protesters’ intention to march toward the Aso Rock Villa, prompted a strong response from the authorities. The security agencies are often highly restrictive concerning demonstrations, especially those linked to the IPOB, which the government has prescribed as a terrorist organization.

‎A key pre-event development was a Federal High Court ruling on Friday, which, while affirming the right to protest, explicitly prohibited demonstrators from assembling near key government structures, including the Villa, a restriction the protesters seemingly ignored.

‎Early this morning, security personnel took control of the protest assembly point. Video evidence circulated by local outlets, including Sowore’s own Sahara Reporters platform, shows protesters quickly scattering due to the discharge of tear gas.

‎Sowore, a former U.S. resident, confirmed his narrow escape from the encounter, which he described as an assault on democracy.
