The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), warning of nationwide protests if their ongoing dispute is not resolved swiftly.

In a statement released Wednesday and signed by NANS President Olushola Oladoja, the student body expressed deep concern over escalating tensions between ASUU and the government. The warning comes amid a warning strike declared by ASUU on Monday after a 14-day ultimatum expired.

The dispute centers on demands including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement, payment of withheld salaries, university revitalization, and sustainable funding for tertiary institutions.

‎Oladoja commended the relative academic stability achieved under President Tinubu’s administration, highlighting two uninterrupted academic years, the first since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. However, he cautioned that unresolved issues threaten to undo these gains and disrupt students’ education further.

The student leader also lauded recent reforms such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and the removal of tertiary institutions from the IPPIS payroll system. He attributed the current crisis partly to poor communication and delays in implementing ASUU agreements, noting that a recent government-initiated meeting failed to hold due to procedural problems.

The students’ union hopes for dialogue to prevent a return to prolonged strikes that could destabilize universities nationwide.
