The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a two-week warning strike starting midnight Sunday, citing government insincerity in current talks.
The strike announcement came during a press conference at ASUU’s national secretariat in Abuja. ASUU president Chris Piwuna explained that despite weeks of negotiations, the government has failed to meet the union’s demands, prompting the decision to withdraw services nationwide.
The strike will disrupt academic activities in all public universities, leaving thousands of students and staff uncertain. ASUU’s grievances include unpaid salaries, inadequate funding for universities, and incomplete implementation of previous agreements.
The union calls on the federal government to honour its commitments to ensure quality education. Many students and parents have expressed frustration, with some describing the strike as “disheartening” given the delays in their academic progress.
The strike will last for two weeks unless a breakthrough occurs early. ASUU has stated it remains open to talks and hopes the government will address its concerns promptly.
