Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) disclosed on Tuesday that Nigerian women trafficked to Libya are giving birth to children while detained in Libyan prisons. She has urged Nigerian authorities to work with Libyan prisons to repatriate these women and their newborns.
Speaking during a Senate plenary debate on the urgent need to protect Nigerians from trafficking and human rights abuses in Libya, Senator Natasha exposed the reality facing trafficked women.
Many women who escaped inhumane trafficking situations in Libya were arrested and now find themselves detained under harsh conditions.
The senator revealed that these detained women are often subjected to sexual exploitation by prison officials, with many becoming pregnant and giving birth within prison walls. These children, she stressed, are innocent and should not suffer alongside their mothers.
Senator Natasha called on the Nigerian Immigration and Prison Services to liaise directly with Libyan prisons for the repatriation of these women and their children. She emphasized the humanitarian importance of ensuring Nigerian heritage children are brought home safely.
