Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has formally resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

‎The announcement was made by Governor Diri’s spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, though no reasons were disclosed for the resignation. Alongside the governor, all PDP members within the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and Commissioners in the State Executive Council have also resigned their party membership.

‎Governor Diri is currently holding a meeting with state executive members, with Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere in attendance.

‎The political rumblings come shortly after Governor Diri and former President Goodluck Jonathan jointly commissioned the Best Western Plus Hotel in Yenagoa.

‎Senator Douye Diri’s political career in Bayelsa is well established; he served as Commissioner under former Governor Goodluck Jonathan and later as Principal Secretary to Governor Seriake Dickson. Elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 on the PDP platform, he became a Senator in 2019 and ascended to the governorship in 2020. He was re-elected as governor in 2023, still under the PDP banner.
