The Federal Government has updated admission requirements, removing Mathematics as a compulsory subject for Arts and Humanities students seeking entry into Nigerian universities and polytechnics, effective immediately.
This policy change was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday and applies to Senior School Certificate Examination results from WAEC and NECO.
For decades, students in the Arts and Humanities have been required to pass Mathematics alongside English and other subjects, a rule now amended to ease access without compromising academic standards.
Under the new guidelines, Mathematics remains compulsory only for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses, while Arts and Humanities students no longer need it as an admission requirement.
The Ministry emphasized that this revision was meant to remove unnecessary barriers that restricted admission chances for many students interested in the Arts fields.
The Federal Government will monitor the effects of this change on admission rates and student performance, planning further reviews to ensure continuous improvement.
