Tuesday’s Group C qualifier between Nigeria and Benin will proceed without three key players after bookings in last week’s matches left both teams shorthanded.
Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche are suspended for the trip to Uyo after receiving their second yellow cards during Benin’s 1-0 win over Rwanda.
Rohr called the suspensions a setback but said his team still controls its fate in the group.
We have lost two players because of a second yellow card. But all is possible for the three teams (South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria). The decision is in our hands. This can be a little advantage. Big suspense until the end – Rohr
Nigeria will also be without one of their top attackers, Ademola Lookman, who was booked twice in Friday’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho and is suspended under CAF’s one-match ban rule for two yellow cards.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle stressed the impact of Lookman’s absence, emphasizing the squad depth and focus;
The team remains focused and confident. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough depth to compete effectively. Every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether as a starter or substitute – Chelle
He added that Lookman will continue to support the team from the bench and dressing room as Nigeria pursues points critical for their World Cup qualification hopes.
The match at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium is a must-win for Nigeria, currently third in Group C behind Benin and South Africa. The outcome will have major implications for the race to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
