President Bola Tinubu has ordered the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to immediately reduce the announced 2026 Hajj fares, aiming to ease the financial burden on Nigerian pilgrims.

‎This directive was conveyed by Vice-President Kashim Shettima during a meeting with NAHCON’s management and board members held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. The Vice-President emphasized the need for close collaboration between national and state officials, including Governors, to adopt a new, more affordable fare structure for the upcoming Hajj season.

‎NAHCON’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Senator Ibrahim Hadeija, explained that the meeting was convened to finalize preparations for the 2026 Hajj operations, specifically focusing on the fare reduction.

‎He mentioned that the current economic reforms have resulted in steady improvements in exchange rates, with the naira appreciating against foreign currencies. He compared last year’s fare range of ₦8.5 million to ₦8.6 million, which was influenced by a less favorable exchange rate, to the current improved rate, which should logically lower the cost for pilgrims.

‎The Presidential directive is expected to boost the number of Nigerian pilgrims able to participate in the 2026 Hajj exercise. The government has pledged quick action to finalize the fare review and ensure timely payments and remittances, in order to offer a smoother and more accessible pilgrimage experience.
