A fire broke out on Monday at the Rivers State Government Secretariat in Port Harcourt, severely damaging the section that houses the Rivers State Pension Board.
The fire engulfed part of the Podium Block at the Rivers State Secretariat, causing significant damage to several offices, including those of the Pension Board. Emergency responders from the state and the Federal Fire Services rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and it remains unclear if there were any casualties at the time this report was published.
Thick smoke was seen billowing from the building as firefighters worked tirelessly to control the fire. The incident has disrupted operations in the affected offices, creating concern among staff and pensioners who rely on the services provided.
This occurrence comes shortly after Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent dismissal of the Pension Board established by the former sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. Firefighters remain on the scene to ensure the fire is completely extinguished. Meanwhile, the state government is expected to issue updates regarding the resumption of services and recovery plans.
