Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central is set to resume plenary sessions today (Tuesday), after completing a six-month suspension, as the Senate reconvenes following its extended recess.

The Senate had initially scheduled its resumption for September 23 but postponed to October 7, extending the annual recess by two weeks, which delayed discussions on key national issues.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return comes amid legal and political tensions, as her legal team insists she has fulfilled her suspension and must be allowed to resume legislative duties without hindrance.

The suspension, handed down in March for alleged misconduct during a protest against her seat reassignment, formally ended in September, but resistance from Senate leadership had prevented her return until now. The embattled lawmaker’s office, sealed since her suspension began on March 6, was recently unsealed by the Deputy Director of the National Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms, which shows readiness for her official return.

Throughout her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained a defiant stance, criticizing Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s leadership as dictatorial and affirming her determination to continue her legislative work.

The Senate spokesperson has yet to comment on the situation as the session begins today.
