Titilola Damilola, a Nigerian businesswoman, returned almost two million naira that was mistakenly credited to her bank account last week. The incident occurred while she was praying for financial help to clear incoming goods.
Damilola shared on her Facebook page that she woke up to a credit alert of nearly ₦2 million via Lemfi, an international money transfer platform.
I woke up to see almost ₦2 million credited to my account. I even thanked God and waited, thinking someone wanted to buy in bulk. But no receipt or message came – Damilola
After confirming the money was not linked to any transaction or customer order, she contacted her sister and later learned that one of her regular customers’ husbands had mistakenly sent the funds to her account. Without hesitation, she confirmed the error and returned the full amount. Though she was offered ₦20,000 as a token of appreciation, she politely refused.
She urged others to reject what does not belong to them, emphasizing that what one puts into the universe returns in folds, whether good or bad.
Similar goodwill was shown by Faiza Abdulkadir, a cleaner at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State, who returned ₦4.8 million mistakenly credited to her account. Despite earning just ₦30,000 monthly and caring for five children and her elderly mother, Faiza said;
If you fear God, anything that does not belong to you would not attract you. We should prepare for the hereafter, not be deceived by temporary worldly gains – Faiza
Faiza was later rewarded ₦2.5 million by an anonymous benefactor and received ₦1 million, food, and vocational equipment from Borno State First Lady, Dr. Falmata Babagana Zulum, on behalf of the state government.
These stories portray the integrity and honesty found within Nigerians despite faced with diverse challenging circumstances.
