Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have expressed deep sorrow over the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old Arise News Media anchor who died on Monday in Abuja after fleeing an armed robbery attack.
Somtochukwu, known as “Sommi”, lost her life after jumping from the balcony of her home in Katampe, Abuja, while attempting to escape suspected armed robbers.
In a message issued today, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu described Somtochukwu as “one of the nation’s young and brilliant minds in the journalism profession, lamenting that her promising life was cut short in its prime. She sends condolences to family, colleagues, and friends of the young journalist, praying for justice and strength for those left behind.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar shared his grief on his X social media handle, stating;
I wish to express my deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an Arise TV newscaster who was killed in an armed robbery attack in Abuja – Atiku
He also sent sympathies to Arise TV’s staff, praying for comfort amid the loss.
Peter Obi described the anchor as a brilliant young anchor and trained lawyer whose voice engaged, informed, and inspired many. He emphasized that her death was not only a personal loss but a huge blow to journalism and to the nation. Obi added that no Nigerian should go to bed fearful of what the night may bring.
Authorities promised to investigate this tragic event to the very end and to bring the perpetrators to book
