Recall, Dawn Herald reported that Somtochukwu Maduagwu, Arise TV news anchor, lost her life following a terrifying armed robbery at her Katampe home in Abuja yesterday.
The incident unfolded as robbers struck her apartment in the early hours, leading to her fatal injuries. The robbery involved at least 14 armed men who systematically moved from flat to flat in the residential complex, robbing occupants of valuables.
The chaos created fear among residents, including Maduagwu, who tried to flee before the robbers reached her. In the process of escaping from the scene, she jumped from her apartment window, sustaining severe injuries.
According to a family friend, police were alerted early but did not arrive promptly. When officers eventually came, their patrol vehicle reportedly had no fuel, preventing immediate hospital transfer for Maduagwu. Attempts to seek urgent medical treatment were further thwarted at Maitama Hospital. The hospital initially rejected her, requesting identification and documents during a time when every second counted. Sadly, before alternative help arrived, she succumbed to her injuries.
A family friend told investigative journalist Temilola Sobola, that Somtochukwu got scared when the robbers started breaking into her apartment complex, so she jumped out the window trying to escape. According to the family friend, when the police finally came, they said their vehicle had no fuel. She begged to be taken to the hospital, but help didn’t arrive in time.
Arise News reporter Ojy shared, that she didn’t die instantly. She made it to Maitama hospital but was rejected because she didn’t have her ID ready. She added that hospital bureaucracy added to the tragedy.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Maduagwu’s death and the robbery attack. Meanwhile, friends and colleagues of Maduagwu remember her as a dedicated journalist whose vibrant life was cut short too soon.
