The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State has given prominent party members, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a strict deadline to register officially with their local wards by December or risk losing party recognition.
Shehu Yohanna, Adamawa State Chairman of the ADC, revealed in an exclusive interview that the party has launched a new membership register and will henceforth acknowledge only those with valid membership cards. According to Yohanna, this aims to ensure full constitutional compliance and strengthen party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stated that Atiku Abubakar should go to his ward in Jada Local Government and register, Babachir Lawal to his ward in Hong Local Government. He added that this is critical for legitimacy and participation in party affairs and that holding leadership positions without registering makes a mockery of the constitution.
The ADC national leadership recently demanded that all coalition members resign from their former parties and complete formal registration with the ADC. This directive has been dismissed by both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as politically motivated.
He also addressed rumors of an internal crisis in the Adamawa ADC, affirming that his tenure continues until 2026 and that the party belongs to the people, not individuals.
