Edo Government to honour late IGP Solomon Arase

The Edo State Government, led by Governor Senator Monday Okpebhole, has announced plans to commemorate the life and legacy of the former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase.

Arase, a native of Edo State, passed away at 69 on August 31, 2025, following a short illness at Cedercrest Hospital, Abuja, which was reported by Dawn Herald that same day

His remains were transported to Benin City, the state capital, on Saturday as preparations begin for his burial ceremonies.

At Benin Airport, Governor Okpebhole, represented by his Chief of Staff, Gani Audu, paid tribute to the former police chief, describing him as one of the most distinguished officers and legal minds from the state. He added that the former IGP was a commendable son of Edo State, and while his passing saddens the state, the state finds solace in the exemplary life he led.

He emphasized that the state administration is collaborating with the bereaved family to find fitting ways to preserve Arase’s memory.

Reflecting on Arase’s character, the governor called him a dedicated team player who was eager to assist others.

Prayers were also offered for the family’s during this sorrowful time, with a pledge from the government to provide all necessary support.

Solomon Arase’s career with the Nigeria Police Force began on December 1, 1981. He rose through the ranks to become Inspector-General in April 2015, under former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. Later, in January 2023, he was appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission by late President Muhammadu Buhari.
