Vice-President Kashim Shettima is set to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled to take place in New York from Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications at the Office of the Vice President, revealed that Shettima will participate in the global gathering that marks eight decades of the UN’s establishment. The opening ceremony will take place at the UN headquarters on September 22.
Mr. Nkwocha noted that the Vice-President will also engage with other world leaders during the high-level general debates running from Tuesday, September 23 through Sunday, September 28. On Wednesday, September 24, between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm New York time, Shettima is scheduled to present Nigeria’s National Statement.
In addition, the Vice-President will join a special climate event for Heads of State and Government hosted by the UN Secretary-General on the afternoon of the same day, where Nigeria plans to unveil its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
Shettima’s agenda also includes participating in a high-profile roundtable convened by the President of Kenya focused on adequate and affordable housing, alongside other bilateral engagements and meetings.
Following his attendance at the UN gathering, Shettima will then proceed to Frankfurt, Germany, for discussions with top executives at Deutsche Bank before heading back to Nigeria.
